Snowflake Loose Parts Play

Invite children to explore snowflakes and radial symmetry with this loose parts play activity!

This snowflake loose parts play invitation is a breeze to set up!

It’s such a simple activity, but it will keep your young kids engaged – it’s an activity they will want to repeat again and again!

You see, loose parts play is something that comes naturally to children. The developmental need for kids to explore their environments and spatial relationships is met through loose parts play activities.

This snowflake loose parts play activity is a great way to not only help children develop spatial awareness, but to introduce children to the concept of radial symmetry.

Radial symmetry is symmetry arranged around a central point. It occurs throughout nature. Some examples of this include an orange or a flower. And of course – snowflakes!

Here’s how we did this loose parts play activity.

Supplies:

  • Construction paper
  • Marker
  • Dish of loose parts (gems, bingo chips, stones, etc.)

Directions:

  1. Use a marker to draw a large snowflake onto a sheet of construction paper. Keep it simple or make it more complicated for older children.
  2. Set the dish of loose parts alongside the snowflake drawing.
  3. Encourage your child to explore and arrange.
