Loose Parts Play Invitation: Element of Line

Invite children to explore the art element of line with this loose parts play activity!

Loose parts play is something that comes naturally to children.

The developmental need for kids to explore their environments and spatial relationships is met through loose parts play activities.

This Element of Line loose parts play activity is a great way to not only introduce children to this element of art, but provides an opportunity to explore the lines that are used to write letters and numbers.

Here’s how we did this activity.

Supplies:

  • Roll of kraft paper
  • Masking tape
  • Marker
  • Dish of loose parts (gems, bingo chips, stones, etc.)

Directions:

  1. Unroll a length of kraft paper.
  2. Use tape to secure the kraft paper to your chosen work space.
  3. Use a marker to draw a variety of lines onto the paper. Some examples include zig-zag, curly, wavy, dotted, and diagonal lines.
  4. Set the dish of loose parts alongside the kraft paper.
  5. Encourage your child to explore and arrange.
