In this craft, tinfoil and cardboard are beautifully transformed into Norse Runes.
Long ago, Viking scribes wrote in “runes.” Runes were a written code. They were used to record history, send messages, label valuable objects, and to case magic spells.
Norse runes were created using only straight lines. This made them easier to carve into surfaces like stone and wood.
Here’s how we used cardboard and tinfoil to create our own Norse runes.
Supplies:
- Norse runes worksheet (download your free copy here)
- Cardboard
- Glue
- Tin foil
- Scissors
Directions:
- Use scissors to cut out a series of narrow strips from cardboard.
- Cut out a 4″ x 5″ rectangle from the cardboard. This will serve as your base.
- Using the rune sheet as a guide, cut and arrange the cardboard strips to recreate a rune of your choice.
- Glue the strips into place.
- When the glue has dried, cover your cardboard creation with a layer of tinfoil. Use your fingers to press down the tinfoil, revealing the rune beneath.
