DIY Lego Building Box

Looking for a screen-free way to entertain your kids in the car, on a plane, or at a restaurant? Make your own travel-ready Lego Building Box!

We recently went on a long road trip to attend a family wedding. Planning for this trip, I knew we needed my toddler son to be entertained for long hours in the car. I made several busy bins to keep him occupied, but this Lego Building Box was one of the most popular.

Lego building blocks have been a staple for kids for decades…and for good reason! So much learning is taking place! When children are playing with building blocks, they are:

  • developing fine motor skills as they connect and disconnect pieces of different shapes and sizes
  • practicing problem-solving in a low-risk environment
  • developing spatial awareness
  • establishing perseverance every time they overcome frustration over something not working the way they expect it to
  • developing creativity

Here’s how you can make your own Lego Building Box to foster exploration and creativity in your child.

Supplies:

  • Plastic container with a lid (I used a school supply box)
  • Small Lego baseplates (to cover the interior of your container)
  • Lego building blocks of various shapes and sizes
  • Hot glue gun*
  • “Let’s Build” label (download your free copy of busy bin labels here)

*As with any project posted on my blog, this craft is intended to be done under adult supervision

Directions:

  1. Use the hot glue gun to attach the small Lego baseplates to the interior of your plastic container.
  2. Add the remaining Lego pieces. I found it worked best to connect the pieces to the baseplates on one side of the container. My son was able to build on the other side of the container. It keep the pieces from going everywhere.
  3. Attach the “Let’s Build” label to the exterior of your container. Enjoy!
