Do you remember playing with play dough as a kid?
It’s an oldie but a goodie when it comes to early childhood and early elementary activities.
When your child is playing with play dough they are…
- developing the small muscles in the hands needed for future fine motor tasks when they do small movements likes rolling and shaping
- expanding their hand-eye coordination as they manipulate the dough
- being introduced to and reinforcing vocabulary when they use play dough task cards to guide their activity
This easy art activity is a low-prep way to introduce your child to shape while nurturing their fine motor skill development. Shape is not only an element of art, but a foundational mathematical concept.
Here’s how to do this art activity (plus that free download I promised):
Supplies:
- Set of Shape Play Dough Task Cards (download your free set here)
- Play dough or clay
- Placemat (optional, but highly recommended)
Directions:
- Print off the Shape Play Dough task cards.
- Cut out task cards and laminate (optional).
- Select a task card to complete.
- Use your hands to create the shape on the task card.
- Repeat these steps with all six cards.
