Symmetrical Heart Paintings

Final Symmetrical Heart Paintings by Abbie Ulstad

An easy painting project for kids that teaches about the mathematical concept of symmetry!

When art and math collide, the result is pure magic.

This painting project is not only easy, but low-prep and provides the opportunity to teach the mathematical concept of symmetry to little ones.

Supplies:

  • Sheet of white drawing paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Washable paint
  • Paint brush

Directions:

  1. Fold the sheet of paper in half.
  2. Use the pencil to draw a half heart shape along the folded edge of the paper.
  3. Use the scissors to cut the heart out.
  4. Paint a design on one half of the paper heart.
  5. When you are done painting, press the two sides of the heart together and rub the paper firmly.
  6. Unfold the paper heart. You should be left with a symmetrical design.

Integrating art into other subjects increases student engagement, improves critical thinking skills, and prepares children for real life because it more accurately depicts real scenarios.
