Spice Play Dough: A No-Cook Recipe for Kids

This easy, no-cook play dough recipe will become a fast favorite. Scented with kitchen spices, this pantry art recipe for kids is a true sensory experience.

Looking to “spice” up your play dough play time? This easy, no-cook play dough recipe for kids is just the thing! It uses ingredients you probably already have in your pantry and provides the most beautiful sensory experience.

Since this recipe doesn’t call for a stove or oven, it would be a great one to create alongside your kids.

Here’s how you make it.

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup table salt
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour with the salt, vegetable oil, and cream of tartar. Mix well to combine.
  2. Pour the boiling water into the flour mixture and stir well to combine.
  3. When the mixture has cooled, use your hands to knead the dough. If the dough is sticking to your hands, add additional flour to the mix. I recommend adding any additional flour two tablespoons at a time.
  4. Divide the dough into 4 equal parts.
  5. To each part, add a teaspoon of a selected spice and knead well. You should end up with a ball of cinnamon dough, a ball of cardamom dough, a ball of ginger dough, and a ball of turmeric dough.
  6. Play away! Store dough in an airtight container when not in use for up to 3 months.

You can use a few drops of food coloring to change the color of your dough, but we preferred the natural tints and shades created by the spices. Isn’t the turmeric dough such a lovely yellow?
