Recreate the beauty of Pysanka Eggs with watercolor paint and crayons in this art project for kids!
The first time I was introduced to Pysanky eggs was while I was watching a Mr. Roger’s episode in grade school.
As a child, I was captivated by the ornate designs created on the fragile surface of an egg shell. I mean, who wouldn’t be?
A tradition in Ukraine, pysanka is the ornate decoration of eggs that uses wax-resist and dye.
Craftsmen begin by drawing detailed designs in pencil on a hollowed-out egg. They then cover the pencil lines with beeswax and dip the eggs multiple times in different colors of dye.
The perfect Easter project for kids, here’s how you can create a watercolor painting of a Pysanka Egg.
Supplies:
- Sheet of heavy drawing paper or watercolor paper
- A dark colored wax crayon
- Watercolor paint
- Paintbrush
- Water
- Placemat (optional, but recommended)
Directions:
- Use your crayon to draw the outline of an egg onto your sheet of paper.
- Use the crayon to decorate your egg with a design of your choice. Press hard to create a strong line with your crayon. The stronger the line you create, the stronger the line will act as boundary when you apply watercolor paint.
- Use watercolor paint to paint your drawing.
