Marker Paintings : Invitation to Create

You and your kids will love this low-mess, low-prep art invitation!

Do you have a project that you look forward to the entire school year because you just know that your kiddos are going to love it and knock it out of the park?

Marker painting is that for me!

All you need for this project is paper, a washable marker, water, and a paintbrush. It’s painting without the mess!

So much learning is taking place in this simple art invitation. Children are exploring the concept of color mixing by combining different marker colors together, the different properties of washable markers, and developing fine motor skills.

Here’s how we did this process-based project.

Supplies:

  • Placemat (optional, but recommended)
  • Sheet of heavy drawing paper or cardstock
  • Permanent marker
  • Washable markers
  • Paintbrush
  • Dish of water

Directions:

  1. Use a permanent marker to create a drawing on a sheet of thick paper or cardstock. Please note that copy paper will NOT work for the marker painting technique used in this project.
  2. Use washable markers to slowly outline your permanent drawing,
  3. Dip a paintbrush into water and apply the water to your marker drawing in a controlled way. The water will change the marker into paint. A little bit of water goes a long way!
