Line Sculptures : An Invitation to Create

Encourage inquiry and independent play with this easy art invitation for kids!

Kids love 3D art activities.

There is something about sculpture work that just seems to draw them in.

This sculpture invitation for kids teaches the art element of line, all while developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and inquiry skills.

Here’s how we did it.

Supplies:

  • Air-dry clay or play dough
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Beads, gems, and/or pom-poms
  • Thick paper or cardstock (optional, but recommended)
  • Marker or pencil

Directions:

  1. Use your hands to roll the air-dry clay or play dough into the shape of a ball.
  2. Tap the ball against a table to form a semi-circle. This semi-circle can be pressed onto a sheet of thick paper or cardstock. This acts as a base for your sculpture.
  3. Manipulate the pipe cleaners to create a variety of lines (i.e. wavy, zig-zag). To create a curly line, you can wrap a pipe cleaner around a marker or pencil.
  4. Stick the pipe cleaners into your clay semi-circle to form a sculpture. Thread beads onto the pipe cleaners and press doo-dads into the clay for added color and interest.
