Explore nature with your kids using this simple leaf rubbing craft!

Some of the most valuable lessons come not from textbooks, but from the world around us. One way to bring the world indoors is through this leaf rubbing project.

There’s something magical about the process of making leaf rubbings. It’s a blend of art and science that encourages children to observe and appreciate the intricate details of leaves. It would be a great opportunity for kids to study plant anatomy, photosynthesis, and the role of leaves in the ecosystem.

Here’s how we made these lovely leaf rubbings.

Supplies:

  • Leaves
  • Crayons in a variety of colors
  • Copy paper
  • Placemat (optional, but recommended)
  • Watercolor paint (optional, but recommended)

Directions:

  1. Go on a nature walk to collect a variety of leaves.
  2. Place a leaf underneath the paper, vein-side up, to ensure the texture transfers well.
  3. Use the side of a crayon to gently rub over the area of the leaf. Use a medium pressure when creating your texture rubbing.
  4. Experiment with colors and arrangements. Layer different colors and leaves on the same paper.
  5. For added color and interest, apply watercolor paint to the white spaces of your leaf rubbing. The crayon wax will act as a wall or boundary.
