“Leaf Man” Craft for Kids

Leaf man _ completed collages _ Abbie Ulstad _ggh

Foster creativity and connection to nature with this leaf craft for kids!

One of my favorite things about art is how compatible it is with other subjects.

This art project accompanies the children’s book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. In other words, this art lesson helps you make the most of your limited instruction time!

Here’s how we did this beautiful nature craft.

Supplies:

  • Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert
  • A sheet of heavy white drawing paper
  • Glue
  • Gathered leaves in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors
  • Googly eyes (optional, but kids love them!)

Directions:

  1. Collect a variety of leaves from outdoors. Softer leaves will work best for this art project (as opposed to dry, crunchy leaves).
  2. Read aloud Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. Pay special attention to how the artist has created creatures out of leaf arrangements.
  3. Arrange your leaves onto a sheet of paper into a creature of your choice. What picture makes sense for the leaves you have found?
  4. Glue your leaves in place.
  5. Add googly eyes to your creations!
