Feed the Birds – A Garland Craft for Kids

Kids will spend time practicing the life skill of sewing with this easy craft – bird food garlands!

Winter is such a beautiful time to slow down and be intentional about the time we spend together, isn’t it? This January, our family has found ourselves particularly drawn to all things cozy and festive.

Here is an easy craft for kids that helps children practice the practical life skill of sewing while taking care of our backyard neighbors (while staying cozy together indoors) – bird food garlands!

Supplies:

  • String
  • Plastic needle
  • Food to string for birds (dried apples, cranberries, popcorn, etc.)
  • Small dishes for each food item

Directions:

  1. Cut a length of string.
  2. Thread a plastic needle with the string. Tie a knot at the end of the string.
  3. Set food items into small dishes for easy access during sewing. Dried apples, cranberries, and popcorn work well for this activity.
  4. Stick the needle into the food items and pull through to create your garland.
  5. Hang your garland outdoors for the birds to enjoy!

As we stitched our garlands, we discussed what other objects around us were created by sewing. We also discussed what types of birds we have seen around our home.
