Studying pollinators or making homemade gifts? These easy beeswax candles are the perfect craft for kids!
These beautiful beeswax candles are the perfect craft for a unit on pollinators, or an activity to do before the holidays.
We are currently studying bees in homeschool. This project was an amazing (and easy) addition to our unit.
Here’s how we made these beeswax candles.
Supplies:
- Beeswax sheets (I purchased this kit for wax and wicks)
- Wick
- Scissors
- Parchment paper (optional, but helps keep the wax from sticking on your work surface)
Directions:
- Roll out a piece of parchment paper that is a little larger than your beeswax sheets. While this step is optional, I highly recommend it. It keeps the wax from sticking to your work surface and minimizes any clean up.
- Lay the wick onto the beeswax, keeping it parallel to the edge of the wax. Trim the wick so that it overhangs only a 1/2″-1/4″ or so from the end of the wax sheet.
- Use your fingers to gently press the wick into the wax sheet, lightly securing it.
- Roll the beeswax tightly around the wick. I have found that it helps if you roll the wax away from you, rather than towards yourself. It also helps if you make these candles in a warm room (heat will help soften the wax and make it easier to create a tight roll).
- Finish your candle by using your fingers to gently press the edge of the wax sheet onto the candle.
- To decorate your beeswax candle, use scissors to cut wax sheets into designs and patterns. Press these cut-outs onto the candle. The most successful decorations are the ones that are the most simple!
