Welcome Lanterns

This easy ice lantern craft for kids is a beautiful way to embrace the darkness of winter.

As the days grow shorter and the nights grow colder, our family loves doing crafts that celebrate light. It just brings an extra level of coziness to the winter season.

It’s a tradition in Scandinavia for families to make snow lanterns to welcome guests and to brighten up the neighborhood. Here is our take on the Swedish tradition.

Supplies:

  • Nature botanicals
  • Water
  • Cake pan
  • Candles

Directions:

  1. Place your candle(s) in your cake pan.
  2. Arrange nature botanicals in the base of the cake pan.
  3. Fill the remainder of your pan with water.
  4. Set your pan outdoors to freeze.
  5. Once the ice has set, remove your welcome lantern from the pan. Running warm water on the edge of the pan can aid in the removal of the lantern if there is any difficulty at all.
  6. Light the candles and enjoy your lantern!
