Using recycled materials is not only good for the wallet but good for the earth. Your kids will love upcycling tin cans into these cute portrait planters.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I absolutely love modeling the conservation of natural resources by using recycled materials in art projects. It not only is a great way to reduce waste, but teaches children flexible thinking and creativity. Reimagining common household items into something new will open their eyes to new possibilities!
This planter craft would make a lovely appreciation gift for an essential worker, teacher, or friend. Here’s how you can do it, keeping that can out of the recycling bin and transforming it into something beautiful.
Supplies:
- Tin can, label removed and washed
- Paintbrush
- Paint (acrylic works best)
- Permanent marker
- Potting soil
- Herb or flower seeds
Directions:
- Being careful of any sharp edges on your can, use your paintbrush to apply a layer of paint to the outside of your can.
- Allow the first coat of paint time to dry entirely before applying a second coat.
- When the paint has dried, use a permanent marker to draw a portrait on the outside of the can. It works best to use simple lines and shapes to create an abstracted portrait.
- Fill your can with potting soil.
- Plant your herbs or flowers in the soil according to the directions provided on the seed packet.
