Scented Rice for Sensory Play

Scented Rice Sensory Bin _ Play in Progress _ Abbie Ulstad _ GGH

This calming DIY scented rice adds a whole new layer to sensory play!

This easy sensory rice is made with only 2 ingredients and can be used as a base for so many play activities!

Sensory play is an essential part of childhood development. It gives kids the opportunity to experience different textures, helps develop fine motor skills and muscle dexterity, and exposes kids to new visuals and scents.

So why give your sensory filler a scent? Besides exposing children to different odors, essential oils can promote relaxation and reduce stress. In particular, I used lavender for this recipe. What a perfect tool for calming anxiety or helping children wind down before bedtime!

Bonus? This is a great way to use up those last precious drops of oil from your almost-empty bottles.

Here’s how we made this scented rice for sensory play.

Supplies:

  • 2-3 empty essential oil bottles
  • 1 bag of rice
  • Container with a lid
  • Tools for sensory play – scoops, gems, bowls, etc. – use whatever you have on hand!

Directions:

  1. Fill your container of choice halfway to three-fourths full of rice. Place your empty oil bottles cap-side down in the rice.
  2. Cover with the lid and let set 24-48 hours.
  3. Remove and recycle the empty bottles.
  4. Add whatever sensory play items you have to the bin and let kids play!
