Your child will explore texture and practice constructing from deconstructed materials in this beach-themed collage project.
All you need for this easy art activity is sandpaper, scissors, paper, and glue!
There is so much learning that takes place during a collage project.
Collage projects provide the opportunity for preschool and elementary students to practice construction from deconstructed materials, as well as aid in the development of reasoning and problem-solving skills. Paper art projects encourage awareness of different colors, sizes, and texture. Additionally, the small movements that collage requires (like gluing) improve pencil grip and prepare children’s hands for the big task of writing.
We created these Sand Castle collages as part of a homeschooling mini unit on the Ocean, but they are a great stand-alone activity. You could also use this art activity as a fun craft following a visit to the beach, a further exploration on texture, or a way to develop shape recognition.
Here’s how we did these beachy sandcastle collages.
Supplies:
- Sheet of heavy paper or cardstock
- Glue bottle
- Scissors
- Sandpaper
- Colored paper (optional)
Directions:
- Use scissors to cut sandpaper and colored paper into various shapes. I highly recommend that an adult does the cutting of the sandpaper.
- Arrange the shapes on your paper to create a picture of a sandcastle.
- Glue your shapes down onto the paper.
