Exploring the Magic of Process Art

Process Art - Exploring the magic

What exactly is process art? Read to find out and get some ideas to try out with your kids!

There is one art education question I am asked more than any other: “What is up with process art?!”

Well, welcome my friend to a beautiful world of artistic wonder!

What Is Process Art?

Process art is art that focuses on the creation process, rather than the finished product.

In other words, it’s art that is all about the journey – the creative journey!

It encourages children to experiment with various materials, techniques, and ideas without worrying about making something “perfect” or “pretty.” It invites artists of all ages to explore, experiment, and express.

Why Choose Process Art?

  1. It Fosters Creativity: It is like a playground for imagination. It nurtures children’s ability to think outside the box, dream big, and explore their unique creative voices. There isn’t just one way to meet an artistic challenge!
  2. Process Art Builds Confidence: By removing the pressure to create a “perfect” artwork, this type of art helps children build self-confidence. Mistakes are just stepping stones to new discoveries.
  3. It Develops Fine Motor Skills: From squeezing paint bottles to tearing paper, these art activities enhance fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  4. Process Art Strengthens Problem-Solving Skills: As children experiment and make choices during the creative process, they develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Again, there isn’t just one way to meet an artistic challenge. Kids get to choose HOW they want to solve an art problem.
  5. It Encourages Independence: Empower children to take ownership of their creative choices, promoting independence and decision-making.

Celebrating the Journey

Remember, the heart of process art lies in the experience, not the outcome. Encourage your children to talk about their creations, share their thoughts and feelings, and reflect on the process. Display their work proudly!

As homeschoolers and classroom teachers, we have the unique opportunity to introduce this type of child-led art. Through embracing the creative journey, you’re nurturing young minds and inspiring a lifelong love for art and self-expression.

Happy creating, friends!
