Making Time For Creativity

Finding it hard to fit art into your schedule? Morning work may be the answer you’re looking for! (+ a free coloring sheet)

Starting the day feeling less rushed and stressed will impact the overall tone of your home. Morning work is a tool to help you achieve the calm, intentional start to your day that you and your little ones dream of.

Morning work is a task that your child can work on while you are getting breakfast on the table or prepping your homeschool lessons.

It provides a soft start to the academic day. It plants a seed of creativity that can be carried throughout the rest of the morning. It serves to build a sense of support and community in your home.

Sounds pretty awesome, right?

So how do you even begin to incorporate Morning Work into your routine?

Start here: Pick a time.

That’s it. Pick a time to consistently provide your kiddos with the opportunity to create. All you need to do to begin incorporating this strategy into your life is to look at your schedule and choose a time that you can consistently provide your children the opportunity to make.

For my family, Morning Work works best in the morning before we eat breakfast. I find that filling my little one’s “love bucket” early in the day pays dividends later on. Additionally, a benefit of having creation time in the morning is that I can get everything ready the night before.

But please know this: morning work doesn’t have to be in the morning!

When it comes to timing, make a decision based not only on what’s best for your child but what’s is best for you. What will help you prepare for the day?

Do you need time in the morning to get breakfast on the table? A few minutes to clean up after lunch? An extra moment or two to prepare your reading lesson for the day?

Whatever time of day works best for your family, be consistent with it. Consistency is the key to any successful routine.

My final word to the wise? Start simple.

I’m talking super simple. Like washable markers and a blank sheet of paper or a coloring page (here’s the free download I promised you) kind of simple. Just make it your primary goal to focus on creating consistently at a predetermined time of your day. Everything else will fall into place.

  • Pick a time slot in your schedule that you can consistently provide your children the opportunity to engage in creative activities.
  • I recommend setting out supplies ahead of time. Less stress for mama!
