This Jim Dine inspired heart painting is perfect for celebrating Valentine’s Day!
In case you aren’t familiar with him, Jim Dine is an American-artist famous for his pop art paintings and drawings of hearts. You can learn more about the painter Jim Dine here and see examples of his work.
This pop art heart painting is a fun way to introduce children to this influential artist – all while celebrating love and friendship. These paintings use contrast and emphasis to create energy and depth.
Here’s how we made these heartfelt paintings.
Supplies:
- Black crayon
- Heavy white drawing paper
- Ruler
- Paintbrush
- Watercolor paint
- Water
- Placemat (optional, but recommended)
Directions:
- With your paper going the tall way, use a ruler and black crayon to make 4-5 horizontal lines. These lines can be horizontal or slightly diagonal.
- Use your ruler and black crayon to make 4-5 vertical lines. These line can be straight up and down or slightly diagonal.
- Use your crayon to draw a simple heart shape on top of the lines that you have drawn.
- In the inside of your heart, color a checkerboard pattern.
- Use watercolor paint to add color to the shapes of your drawing that have not been colored in with crayon.
- Dry and display!
