Jack-O-Lantern Faces: An Invitation to Create

This spooky invitation to create is a great way to introduce your child to shape, artistic choice, and emotion!

If you want to use glue in this art activity, you will end up with a fabulous Halloween craft.

If you want to skip the glue, you have transformed this project into a transient art activity.

Transient art activities help children imagine the possibilities. It gives kiddos the freedom to create and explore without the pressure of creating a final product.

Glue or no glue, there is so much learning taking place with these Jack-o-Lantern faces. This process-based art invitation introduces children to shape, emotional expression, and works to build their independence and confidence through provision of artistic choice. It also develops their spatial awareness, fine motor skills, and their pincer grasp.

Here’s how we did it.

Supplies:

  • An orange paper circle or paper plate
  • Black construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue (optional)

Directions:

  1. Use scissors to cut your black construction paper into a variety of shapes.
  2. Set the shapes alongside the orange paper circle or paper plate.
  3. Invite your child to arrange the shapes to create a Jack-o-Lantern face.
  4. If you want, use glue to adhere the shapes in place. Otherwise, this activity is a great one for kids to do over and over again. There are so many ways the simple shapes can be arranged to create new expressions and personalities.
