This glue watercolor painting project is an art activity adaptable for all ages!
If you are working with kids of multiple ages or varying abilities – this glue watercolor painting project is for you!
This painting project for kids provides children the opportunity to practice their paint mixing, brush control, and watercolor techniques in a safe space. The glue resist is a strong safety net. Children – young and old – are sure to be dazzled by the results!
Working with a younger child? Use a hot glue to create the drawing needed for their watercolor painting in a matter of minutes.
Working with an older child? Encourage independence and artistic choice by having them create the drawing using liquid school glue. If going this route, just be sure to give the glue about 24 hours to dry before moving on to the painting step.
Here’s how we made these glue watercolor paintings.
Supplies:
- Heavy drawing paper or watercolor paper
- Glue (hot glue or liquid school glue – see notes above)
- Watercolor paint
- Paintbrush
- Water
- Placemat (optional, but recommended)
Directions:
- Use glue to draw a design of your choice onto your sheet of paper.
- Allow the glue time to harden completely.
- Apply watercolor paint to your glue drawing. The glue will resist the paint, preserving your design.
