Garden Paintings – An Invitation to Create

Develop your child’s independence and confidence with this process-based art project!

What if I told you that you could set up an art invitation in 5 minutes? And that you could enjoy a hot cup of coffee as your child painted?

Well, friend. THIS is that art invitation.

Process-based art activities (aka activities focused on the making of art) develop independence and confidence as they encourage children to make their own choices about their artwork.

Process-based art activities also aid in the development of critical thinking skills and inquiry.

They are often easy to set up, child-led, and allow you to sit back, relax, and enjoy your child’s creativity.

Here’s how we did this process-based art Garden Painting.

Supplies:

  • Tempera paint sticks or washable markers
  • Roll of kraft paper
  • Tape

Directions:

  1. Unroll a length of kraft paper.
  2. Use tape to secure the kraft paper to your chosen work space.
  3. Use paint or markers to create a variety of colored circles on the kraft paper.
  4. Set paint or markers alongside the kraft paper.
  5. Encourage your child to transform the dots into flowers by adding their own lines and shapes. It can be helpful to provide an example for your young artist.
