Frozen Flower Cupcakes

Ice flower cupcakes craft for kids by Abbie Ulstad

Searching for a nature craft that celebrates the coming of spring while also appreciating winter? These frozen flower “cupcakes” are an easy, free activity to do with young children!

The transition from winter to spring is an unpredictable one here in Minnesota. Mother Nature can be a bit of a practical joker, giving us a late snowstorm after teasing us with sunny days.

These ice cupcakes are the best of both worlds. They harness the beauty of spring and still celebrate what winter offers us.

Here’s how we did it.

Supplies:

  • Flowers or leaves
  • Muffin tin
  • Water

Directions:

  1. Arrange your natural botanicals in the muffin tin.
  2. Fill the remainder of the tin with water.
  3. Set your muffin tin outside (if it is below freezing) or in the freezer.
  4. When the water has frozen solid, remove the cupcakes. If they get stuck in the pan, running warm water over the back of the pan for a few moments should do the trick.
  5. Play with the flower “cupcakes” as you please. They would be a great addition to an outdoor play kitchen.
