These cardboard butterfly wings are a fun and easy spring craft for kids!

Welcome to spring! Is there a better way to celebrate the season than with a fun butterfly craft?

Making butterfly wings out of cardboard is a creative and easy way to engage your children in dramatic play. Additionally, these cardboard butterfly wings provide the opportunity for your kids to learn about symmetry and butterfly anatomy.

This craft is simple enough for kids of all ages and can be done with everyday materials found around the house.

Here’s how we made these darling cardboard wings.

Supplies:

  • Cardboard
  • Black marker
  • Scissors or a utility knife
  • Glue
  • Yarn or elastic
  • Paint or markers

Directions:

  1. Use a black marker to draw the outline a butterfly wing onto your piece of cardboard.
  2. Use a utility knife or scissor to carefully cut out the wing.
  3. To create symmetrical wings, you can use your cardboard wing as a template to trace. After drawing a second wing, cut it out.
  4. Use black marker to add details and shapes onto your cardboard butterfly wings. This would be a great opportunity to introduce the concept of symmetry to kids. Whatever shape is drawn onto one of the wings should be drawn onto the other wing.
  5. Use glue to attach yarn or elastic shoulder straps onto your butterfly wings. You may also want to attach the top of the wings together (where the wings would sit over the shoulder blades).
  6. Finally, use paint or marker to add color to your cardboard butterfly wings. Remember to add color symmetrically! Whatever you color on one wing, be sure to color on the other wing!
